Bethlehem, day 1

Today was the big bridge crossing from Jordan to Israel. En route we stopped at Mount Nebo, where Moses was allowed to see the promised land without crossing into it. We also stopped at a church-supported organization that serves deaf children and other young people with special needs. We toured the facility which included sewing and weaving workshops, a carpentry shop, a computer room, and a workshop where students learn to make recycled paper.

It was a fascinating stop, and, of course, the hospitality was amazing. We were served what amounted to a buffet lunch with bread, humus, olives, tomatoes, falafel, cheese, and multiple beverages.

Once we arrived in Bethlehem we had a tour of the International Center (where we're staying at the guest house) and a walking tour of the old city. The olive harvest is happening now, and there was a festival taking place in Manger Square. We got in on another wedding, this time at the Church of the Nativity.
